Conjure up images of skiwear and, chances are, visions of neon puffa jackets will skip across your mind's eye. But skiwear and winter sports outerwear has come a long way since the, uh, 1980s. At Aspen Fashion Week's winter 2010-2011 shows, the biggest story on the slopes (or, at the base of Aspen Mountain, as the case may be) was neutrals. Who would ever have thought that the subdued, earth-toned trends of the dampened economy could even touch the gleaming spires of one of America's richest ski resort towns?
The neutrals didn't stop there—in the ongoing blurring of lines between snowboarding/skiing and streetwear, there was a noticeable increase in black and white pieces on the runway for next season. While we only saw a handful of neon yellows, hot pinks, and gaudy patterns, there was a sea of black, white, and grey pieces featured on every designer catwalk. Indeed, entire skiwear labels are founded on the principle of catering to the urbanite weekend ski-warrior—Aether Apparel, for example makes slick jackets that are just as at home on the slope as they are on the Upper West Side.
Though the standard oranges, reds, and teals stuck their ground, showing up piecemeal in nearly every collection, we noticed that strong kelly greens and jewel-tone purple garments dominated the color category.
